Sending Push Messages is a key way to increase app user engagement. To learn how to send a message, follow these steps or watch the video below:
To create a message, go the the Mobile App Studio Menu and select "Send a message."
When you select "Send a message," you will be taken to the Message Overview. Here, you will see statistics such as Message Trend by Week, Messages with the most opens, as well as how many message notifications were sent, and how many of those users notified opened the Message. Start by clicking "Compose."
Give your message a title that will grab your audience's attention:
Fill in any additional information in the Body.
This will appear when they tap the notification and are navigated to the Message Center.
Drag and drop Action Draggables into your Message.
Actions give your app a more interactive component. If your Message is about an event, for example, you can include directions, a website for people to RSVP, or link someone's email so they can reach out to the coordinator of the event with any questions or concerns.
You can send your Message to your entire audience, or you can create Push Categories, which target select users. Some packages also include geofencing. This means that you can send a Message to people in a certain area. Your Customer Success Manager is a great resource to help you determine the best way to reach out to your audience using push, and can help you discuss what features are included in your package.
As you're writing your message, use the App Preview on the left side of the screen. There you can see how your Message fits both In App and from the Lock Screen. This can help ensure that your Message is easy to read and fits phone screens well.
When you're ready to send your Message, you can choose whether the notification is sent now, or later. Selecting "Now" will send your Message. Selecting "Later" will allow you to schedule a time and a date for your Message to be sent. If you're not ready to send your Message at all, it will be saved as a Draft so that you may edit it later.
Things to remember:
- A good title is key. The title must be attention-grabbing and compel users to tap on the Message to learn more.
- If you're not ready to send your message, it will be saved in the Drafts folder for you to return to at a later date.
- Timing is important. If you message users too frequently, they may get annoyed and disable push notifications- or worse- uninstall the app. Be sure not to bombard users with notifications. Also be aware of what time you're scheduling your pushes. You will get fewer messages opened at 3 AM than early afternoon.
- Talk to your Customer Success Manager to see what your package includes: whether it be regions, campuses, etc. If these aren't included in your package, your CSM will be happy to discuss additional options to engage your audience.
