What is it?
RSS, or Rich Site Summary, is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many online publishers offer a subscription through an RSS feed to keep users up-to-date on their content. So, as new content is created, such as blog entries, podcasts, news, and videos, it provides a constant stream of information to users.
How does it work in the app?
When an RSS feed is enabled within a specific container, it takes the .xml code from the website that it was hosted on and populates certain pieces of data into your app. This includes things like the title, image (if applicable), description, and a link to the full article.
How often is content updated?
Here at Emplify, we run the feeds for all of our clients nightly. Feeds run between 7 pm and 7 am (ET). Therefore, any of your content that was published today before that time, will show up automatically in the app by tomorrow morning. Keep this in mind if there is any content that may be time-sensitive.
How do I add an RSS link to my app?
Feeds are not part of every package, so contact your Customer Success Manager to see what your package includes. If feeds are a part of your package, you must submit the name of the container you would like the feed to be placed in, as well as the RSS link. If you are in implementation, send this information to your CSM. If your app is live, send this information to email@example.com.
How do I find my RSS link?
The location of your RSS link can vary depending on the website that it is hosted on. One way to find it includes downloading an extension through Google Chrome called RSS Feed Reader.
Google Chrome RSS Feed Reader:
Once this is installed, go to the website that you want to feed to the app. Next, click on the RSS feed icon. Notice that on a website with an RSS feed, there will be a small plus sign next to the icon.
This will open up a menu. Click the plus sign in the corner of the menu to add feed, then Follow. Click the checkmark in the right corner.
This will take you back to the sites that you are following. Click the settings gear in the left corner and select Settings. Scroll down and select Open External Settings.
This will take you to a webpage where you can sort through your feeds. Select the feed you need the link for, and in the Path field you will find the link. Copy this link and send it to the appropriate person to add it to your app.
iTunes Podcast link:
If you are trying to use an RSS feed for a Podcast, you can get the link from iTunes. Find the podcast you would like included in your app and click Subscribe. You will be asked if you would like to Subscribe. Click Subscribe again.
Navigate to your library, then podcasts, then right click on the podcast you would like the link for, and select "Copy Podcast URL."
Things to remember:
- An RSS feed is a great way to automatically pull things such as videos, blogs, and news articles from a website to your app.
- Feeds run once per day between 7 pm and 7 am (ET), so the content you add at 3 pm will be available on the app the next day.
- If your app is in implementation, send the RSS link and the name of the container you would like your feed to be in to your CSM. If your app is live, send this information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
